When British astronauts land on the moon and discover evidence of a previous moon landing the top scientists of the world go on a frenzy to discover who were the original men who landed on the moon years earlier. Their search leads them to Arnold Bedford who begins his fascinating story of how him and his girlfriend Katherine Callender and good friend crazy scientist Joseph Cavor flew to the moon by means of a newly discovered element called cavorite using a sphere. He tells them the story of a long lost civilization that dwells deep in the caverns of the moon called the Sellenites who's life is powered by the light of the sun. While on the moon Cavor, Bedford and Kate are separated, Kate is taken prisoner by the Sellenites and goes thru a series of experiments by the alien beings, putting her into an apparatus that allows them to see into her bone structure. Upon the discovery of a strange entrance Cavor and Bedford are attacked by a Moon Calf a giant moon who chaces Cavor and traps Bedford inside of cave. While Bedford tries to escape the clutches of the creature Cavor is taken captive by the Selenites and is taken to the same apparatus where Kate is trapped. There the Sellenites communicate with Cavor and is given a tour of their main power source. While Cavor and Kate explore the wonders of the alien technology, Bedford is still trying to fend off the Moon Calf but some of the Sellenites attack the creature with their ray guns and kill it, within minutes they strip the creature of its skin and leave his bones behind, Bedford follows them to their man lair. There he rebuilds the sphere and rescues Kate, In the mean time Cavor is taken to the presence of the Sellenite leader the Gran Lunar, he walks up the set of the giant stairs with a bit of a cold and the leader makes his appearance. There he questions his visit and asks Cavor about life on earth, when Cavor mentions War the Gran Lunar tells him that he fears that other will come and destroy their way of life that is why he and the rest are to never leave the moon. Out of nowhere Bedford arrives and creates complete chaos attacking the Sellenites and shooting the Sellenite leader. He takes Cavor back to the sphere where Kate is already inside, with the Sellenites hot in their trail. With the help of Cavor they manage to rebuild the sphere and prepare to leave, as the alien beings arrive Cavor decides to stay behind at the surprise of Kate and Bedford. The sphere launches back into space headed straight for earth while Cavor stays behind. Bedford finishes his story and tells the reporters that they crashed of the coast of Zanzibar. Meanwhile the astronauts discover evidence of the Sellenite civilization but everything seems to crumbling at their feet and they discover that the who alien population was wiped out by a simple virus...a cold.
