An Animated Life

Well I bet that by now many of you have your hands on this amazing book covering Mr. Harryhausen's career in stop motion animation and cinema. Well this wont be a huge review since I still don't have a scanner ready to add some of the very cool behind the scenes shots that are found within the book itself but I will try to provide you with some of the details.

First of all the book has two different covers, the one you see on the left is the U.S version of the book that was released in April I believe, the one of the right is the UK version that has been out for a while now. The only difference in the books are their covers other than that its virtually the same book. The book starts out with a foreword by Ray Bradbury which makes for a very interesting read, then goes in to some info about the authors Tony Dalton and Ray himself. This takes you to an adventure with Ray from his early beginnings when he did his first model of a cave bear constructed of a wooden frame with the ball and socket joints made out of a bed to his very last feature film in 1981 "Clash of the Titans" The book covers every film from Mighty Joe Young, Sinbad, Jason and the rest with amazing detail and some behind the scenes stuff that will amaze you, this includes film locations, film reviews by many critics, films costs, and some very funny things that happened during the filming of the films. Every creature that has ever appeared in his films is explained from the early sketches to the finish creature appearing in its respected film. He explains how every scene in which a creature appears was created along side the live actors. The book has tons of his early sketches for most of the creatures and some that never became a reality and I mean tons of them. An entire chapter is dedicated to the films that where on the drawing boards, the chapter is called "Lost Projects, Lost Worlds" where he covers along side early drawings of the films what could have been. I've added two skechtes here, on the left was a creature called "Charybdis on the right was "Scylla" both were going to appear in the film called "Force of the Trojans" amazing creatures in what could have been an amazing film.

Here is a list of some of the rest, there are more many more! and some day I hope to add a page for all these projects with the sketches found in the book

The Abominable Snowman

Dante's Inferno

The Hobbit

Atlantis

Conan

Food of the Gods

People of the Mist

Sinbad and the seven wonders of the world

When the world cracked open

Tarzan and Ant men

There are many more and once you read this chapter you could imagine how big and successful these projects could have been.

Well in all the book is amazing and worth its prize! its a must have for every fan of Ray and his creations. You can get your copy at most book stores if not get yours from Amazon for about $35.00 and well worth it! so what are you waiting for trust me you wont put this book down once you start reading it!
